Traditional horn-comb process · not a heritage listing

YUNBEN · Horn

Buffalo and ram horn | Nujiang valley, Yunnan

Only the middle of the horn is used — the ends crack. One horn yields two or three combs. The process follows the traditional horn-comb sequence: blanking, steaming, pressing, cutting teeth, filing teeth, polishing, waxing. Tooth cutting and filing are entirely by hand. A machine cut leaves 0.3 mm variance and blunt tips; hand cutting means checking every tooth, with the last pass judged by running a fingertip across the tips.

DIANFU · Silver

Silver ornament forging (Heqing silverwork) | Xinhua Village, Dali

In the Nanzhao period, Heqing tinsmiths carried bellows and anvils from village to village, digging a pit by the road to light a fire. Six centuries later the hammer is the same hammer.

The core technique is raising: one silver sheet hammered outward into a vessel with no soldered seam. Every hammer mark is the pattern — heavy blows make planes, light blows make grain, all without a drawing. The craft was inscribed in the fourth national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2014, nominated by Heqing County, Yunnan.

A code is not decoration.
It is a record.

Codes read CN · trademark · season. CN·YB·2604 means platform · YUNBEN · fourth batch of 2026. Each one resolves to material batch, process record, maker and workshop.

One code, one piece. A batch shares its season, but maker and process are recorded piece by piece. Custom orders are coded too — urgency is not a reason to skip the record.

What we do not say

Words we do not use

Heritage status is a defined legal category, not an adjective. These are our own limits on what we write — buyers are welcome to hold us to them.

01
No invented listings

Heritage names and numbers match the State Council catalogue exactly. Horn craft has no national listing in Yunnan, so we describe the process and claim no heritage title.

02
No invented titles

We do not use titles such as “heritage master” or “inheritor” unless the maker is formally recognised by the cultural authorities, with level and batch stated.

03
No health claims

Combs, boards and vessels are everyday objects with no therapeutic or medical claims.

04
No unlicensed marks

Until formally recognised as a heritage workshop, that label does not appear on packaging or pages. Heritage marks are never combined with QR codes or company logos.
